It’s almost 10 years since the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) came to Georgia, very soon after the August War. According to the EU Council decision of 2008 the EUMM formally covers the whole territory of Georgia, though reality differs. On the very first day mission started functioning it was denied enter to the occupied territories of Georgia. How has the Mission adapted to the reality to still get the maximum information on the situation on the other side of the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL)? What is the dynamic of the people detentions at the ABL? How the EUMM operates on the ground? The RFE/RL interviewed the Head of the EUMM in Georgia – Erik Hoeg, a Danish diplomat. He’s been serving at the EUMM since 2015 and was appointed as the Head of the Mission in December, 2017.
